Sadia Muddassir Week 11: Psychology Behind Fonts

Typography is not just simply choosing a font that looks good, it is a psychological tool that possesses the ability to completely change the way we feel and think about what we're reading. I noticed this when I was working on a poster for club on Canva, and everytime I changed the font of my title, modified its appearance, bolded, italicized, even a simple shift, made a big difference.

Different tones can be conveyed through appearance alone, as Svaiko mentions in his article, "Serif fonts convey a traditional and reliable tone" while "Bickham Script conveys a sense of luxury", both are used for different purposes. The "Bickham" font, with its soft and welcoming display, is often used for wedding invitations and by luxury brands. On the other hand, Serif and Impact fonts are "bold and heavy" and are often used in headlines and logos, catching audience's attention first.

This reveals the role of fonts in advertisements and campaigns. For example, in marketing, large and bold fonts are frequently used to draw attention, like those you see while shopping "SALE" or "ACT FAST". These bold words are used to evoke a sense of urgency and importance, making them impossible to ignore. Svaiko highlights, "research has shown that increasing the boldness of the font increases the ease of reading and directs attention". Another great example, can be seen in political campaigns. Barack Obama's 2008 campaign "Hope" poster, utilizes the bold and standard font, which expressess confidence and assurance. The impact of the poster would not have been the same if the text had been presented in a different font.

Typography influences how we interpret messages, as the choice of font can evoke emotions and guide our mindset in response. It is a powerful psychological influence that shapes our perception of the world around us.

  1. Hello, Sadia! I never really thought about how much fonts influence how we perceive things until reading your post! Typography does seem like it's so much more than just picking a font that looks good though—it can be used as a psychological tool. Though I may not have known it at the time, I have experienced this myself while designing posters. Its as though changing the font or adjusting the title's appearance completely changed it from something more calm to a more vibrant tone instantly. It’s fascinating to think how a single change in font type in political campaign posters such as Obama’s “Hope” poster could have conveyed something other than the confidence and trust we attribute to it. Until today, I never realized how fonts could have such an impact on how we interpret messages and influence our emotional responses. Your post was insightful and enlightening, demonstrating how typography is truly an art form in and of itself.
