Leila Alabed Week 12 - The Power of Words

The way in which we speak can impact how we are perceived in America. Language plays a large role in our society—from job interviews to every-day conversations. The way we present ourselves, meaning the words we say and our body language, affect how we are treated.

While this fact is not inherently bad on its own, people may hold prejudice against those who present themselves differently. For example, someone who speaks in a thick accent may be viewed as unintelligent or unable to complete tasks, even though that assumption is incorrect. Likewise, some may be viewed as immature or informal for using slang in a professional setting. These instances prove that language has power over our circumstances in society.

While the saying, "actions speak louder than words," is often said, it ultimately disregards the power language has over us. Harsh and excluding language can push people away thus isolating ourselves, while kind and motivating words can alternatively bring people together and spark friendship.

So, in summary, the words we say and the way in which we present ourselves does truly matter in American society. While it would be unnatural and wrong to change the way we speak in order to fit a certain narrative, instead we should promote seeking out communities and opportunities in which we are valued and accepted. American society as a whole should make an effort to embrace our linguistic differences and create an equitable environment. By working against language-based prejudices, we can become a country in which communication is not a barrier, but the key to empowerment.

  1. Hi Leila. I completely support your critique of the role of language in modern American society. I remember in one of my previous CE articles the author mentioned that due to the elite class living in a "highly verbal world," it creates a divide between the poorer workers who are struggling to obtain necessities and those who are better off and have time to turn their minds to other things. At the highest level of influence, language is very weaponized and manipulated away from how it should be used. I agree with you in that language, rather than being used to shift a group's perception and vilify others, should instead be better utilized as a tool to empower people.
